I'd never heard of the ambiguity to be honest, I always took bi-monthly to mean every two months.

My vote went for $1 but I guess I would probably recommend that more as a minimum. How likely are your referrers to take away people subscribing directly/non through a referrer. If the answer is none which I would suspect it might be online, then you can give them quite a bit as you haven't really lost anything through the scheme.

Hey John,

I've been doing affiliate marketing for the past year, and most sales type offers offer between 5-10% commission on sales.

One issues you'll run into though is at <$2.00 you'll be competeting directly with email submission offers which pay between $1.25<>$1.55.

Rather then see the print version online, I'd suggest offering the Web Only version at say $20/Year with say $5/Commission. Azoogle and some of the other larger web marketing companies allow you to start a campaign for just a few thousand and change your lead prices with only a few days notice.

Run the campaign for a few weeks and adjust from there, but $5 on a $20 subscription could definitely attract some interest.

If the online subscription is $10/year and we have 6 issues per year, that works out to $1.67 per issue.

For a print issue, the cost to print is somewhere between $1.50-$2.00 per issue and postage within Canada would be around $1.50 (it get's cheaper as we send out tens of thousands of copies). So, using the top range, $2.00 printing + $1.50 shipping + $1.67 income (I still have staff to pay), would equal $5.17 an issue or $31.02 per year (although I'll likely even the number out to $31/year).

What I need to do is come up with a decent referral program where a webmaster makes some good cash but at the same time the price isn't driven up too much. For example, if I offer $1.00, the online subscription cost would be $11.00 and the print would be $32/year.

Postage to the US would be more.
Help me out with the math here. If you plan to make $10/year profit from a subscription, how does that mean that the cost is $1.67 per issue?

Lets just make this easy.

If I wanted to subscribe, how much would it cost me?

Subject: Offering Referrals. Thoughts please.
Topic Replies: 6

My new magazine is just a couple months away from the release of the first issue. I'm looking to build up sales of subscriptions as quickly as possible.

One of the things I have been thinking about is offering paid referrals. If a sale is made, a portion of the sale goes back to the webmaster.

While I'm not too worried about the code involved in this, I'm concerned about how much I should be paying to make this worthwhile to webmasters and not lose my shirt doing it.

Currently, my plan is to make $10 profit a year from each subscription. Since our magazine is bi-monthly, that means I'll make $1.67 per issue.

Considering that a magazine takes a great deal of time and money (printing the magazine is going to be approximately $15,000 per issue), I need to ensure that I'm not cutting myself so short that the business will fail.

I also want to make subscription prices attractive enough that people will subscribe. I'll also be offering online subscriptions which will be the same price of the print version of the magazine minus the printing and distribution costs ($10-$15/year).

So, what does everyone think would be a fair commission that would attract many websites but also not considerably drive up the price of a subscription?

Thanks,

John

I personally think that restricting this type of text ad is a bad idea. Sure, it may look similar to a Google Ad, and there could be a number of reasons for it. The person submitting the ad may have absolutely no artistic talent at all.

Now, I can understand a website owner wanting to keep his ads making money, but if you start getting too restrictive you run the risk of losing good advertisers.

Maybe consider a compromise. Add an additional parameter to your code to identify ads that may be a concern and allow website owners to disable those ads from showing on their site. That way, everyone wins. Sure, it's a little time coding, but you don't alienate anyone.

Just my 2 cents. Which is worth about 2.02 cents US.

There were some software updates made on the server which caused the cron jobs not to run. This means that accounts, stats, referal information etc wasn't updated on the account homepage correctly. All of the banner, click and site stats have been tracked correctly during this time, the generated reports though were not. We are working on the problem and are running tthe reports manually for the time being. Any questions let me know.
